Are you planning to get married? Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

  • What do I need to do to get married?
    Check the Helpful Information page and click on the links.
  • What documents do I need to get married?
    You will need to complete a "notice of intended marriage application form" and prove your identity with a birth certificate and/or passport and a driver's license or other photo ID. Go to the helpful information page and click on the links to find out more.
  • How old do I have to be to get married?
    You have to be 18+ years, or 16 years with parents or guardian's consent.
  • Where can I get married in Australia?
    You can get married anywhere in Australia, even a hot air balloon.
  • How long does the ceremony last?
    Generally most ceremonies last 20 minutes or longer. Once the legal requirements are fulfilled, you can tailor your ceremony to last longer.
  • Can I write my own Vows?
    Yes. There is a minimum legal requirement to be covered off, then you can personalise your vows to make them unique for you.
  • Can I have my pet at the ceremony?
    It's lovely to have your special pet to your wedding, but check with your wedding venue to make sure pets are allowed.
